Abstract

|
The issues of mental health and welfare have been a great concern in every nation as well as in Korea. It is true that the opinions and arguments for the necessity of the promotion of mental health plans in Korea -have actually on the rise since 1980, while some of the professionals have
emphasized its importance for the past decades.
Public mental health education is one of the dimensions of community psychiatry and the initial
emphasis on the public education for the promotion of Korean mental health is made on the fact
that the continuum of public education is most important. Thus, the literature on mental health is
reviewed here and the current data of the epidemiology of mental disorders in Korea also is shown.
In addition, discussions on the preexisting issues and concerns in the field of mental health in
Korea and some of the arguments in this field to promote better understanding in public mental
health and welfare as well as the furthering professional education in the field of mental health in
Korea are presented.
